Issues in the Blandford-Znajek Process for GRB Inner Engine

چکیده

Several issues on the Blandford-Znajek process are discussed to demonstrate that it can be an effective mechanism for powering the gamma ray bursts. Using a simple circuit analysis it is argued that the disk power increases the effective power of the black hole-accretion disk system, although a part of disk power can be dissipated into black hole entropy. Within the framework of the force-free magnetosphere with the strong magnetic field, the magnetically dominated MHD flow is found to support the Blandford-Znajek process and it is demonstrated that the possible magnetic repulsion by the rotating black hole may not affect the efficiency substantially.

Blandford-Znajek process as a gamma ray burst central engine

We investigate the possibility that gamma-ray bursts are powered by a central engine consisting of a black hole with an external magnetic field supported by a surrounding disk or torus. The rotational energy of the black hole can be extracted electromagnetically as a Poynting flux, a mechanism proposed by Blandford and Znajek(1977). Recently observed magnetars indicate that some compact objects...

The Blandford-Znajek Process as a Central Engine for a Gamma Ray Burst

We investigate the possibility that gamma-ray bursts are powered by a central engine consisting of a black hole with an external magnetic field anchored in a surrounding disk or torus. The energy source is then the rotation of the black hole, and it is extracted electromagnetically via a Poynting flux, a mechanism first proposed by Blandford and Znajek (1997) for AGN. Our reanalysis of the stre...

Baryonic pollution in gamma-ray bursts: the case of a magnetically driven wind emitted from a disk orbiting a stellar mass black hole

Most models for the central engine of gamma-ray bursts involve a stellar mass black hole surrounded by a thick disk formed after the merging of a system of compact objects or the collapse of a massive star. Energy released from the accretion of disk material by the black hole or from the rotation of the hole itself extracted by the Blandford-Znajek mechanism powers a relativistic wind along the...

Development of General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Code and Its Application to Central Engine of Long Gamma-ray Bursts

In order to investigate formation of relativistic jets at the center of a progenitor of a long gammaray burst (GRB), we develop a two-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) code. We show the code passes many, well-known test calculations, by which the reliability of the code is confirmed. Then we perform a numerical simulation of a collapsar using a realistic progenitor mo...

The spin-dependence of the Blandford-Znajek effect

The interaction of large scale magnetic fields with the event horizon of rotating black holes (the Blandford-Znajek [1977] mechanism) forms the basis for some models of the most relativistic jets. We explore a scenario in which the central inward “plunging” region of the accretion flow enhances the trapping of large scale poloidal field on the black hole. The study is carried out using a fully ...
